Pirates of the Caribbean - Another opinion

Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest

I asked several friends to go with me to see this movie. They declined. Their loss.

First about Johnny Depp. A few months ago I saw him on The Actor's Studio. He is a bright, sweet, honest and good person; at least he appears to be and a wonderful actor. I will never forget him in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" and "Edward Scissorhands", nor will I in Pirates of the Caribbean/Black Pearl. Okay, so he happens to be around my son's age; I don't care. The man (and I mean man) is seductively extraordinary. He continues to inhabit his character in this movie, Jack Sparrow, as he did in Black Pearl.

The Movie ~

I can't decide if I like it as well as I did the first, I'm going to have to see it again...so I can swoon over Mr. Depp.

Walking out of the theatre I heard some folks mumbling that they didn't like it as well as the first. If you haven't seen the first movie, rent it before you see the sequel. I wanted to tell them that they weren't coming to see an epic film, just a summer movie. I didn't Smile

There are several "holes" in the script (IMHO). Questions from the first movie were explained and, of course, there were new questions added to be answered in the sequel-sequel. I did notice two things, as far as continuity is concerned, Jack still has that "sore" on his face and .... Tia's fingernails were short in one scene and miraculously grew/perfectly manicured in a matter of minutes. Nit-picking. I notice things like that.

It is a bit slow and predictable; I was squirming in my seat from time to time, but that could have been my RLS.

It is visually stunning. I like the returning characters. Orlando Bloom's (Depp's friend) performance wasn't so hot. Bill Nighy was hilarious as Davy Jones. There are lots of corny and clever jokes. I'm trying to think of my favorite line...if I can remember it, I will add it later; whatever.

The movie is visually stunning. I felt like I was walking into my favorite painting and not wishing to come out of it again. It did feel like something was missing, can't put my finger on it; probably not as much "heart" as the first one. I still liked it. I will have to see the third installment because the end purposely leaves you hanging and thinking, "What in the Sam Hill is going on?" But that's just me.
