Senseless Music
By Mr. I.M. B.A.C.
“Girl shake that Laffy Taffy (candy girl)!” People today go crazy when they here this joint. This is the chorus of one of the most meaningless songs today. I believe the music industry is becoming a way to make a quick buck. You have artist who can’t rap or sing. They just pop up out of the blue and get platinum hits. Meanwhile the artists who have a genuine love for music are overlooked. Today’s artist make songs that aren’t about anything like Laffy Taffy and make millions. Now D4L’s Laffy Taffy isn’t the only song out there that’s like this. They aren’t the only artists who are this way. Take Baby from Cash Money Records, he never talks about anything but money, women, and jewelry. Those are the subjects most artists talk about now and days in Hip-Hop. There are dozens of artists who just rap to make money such as: 50cent, Mike Jones, Dem Franchize Boys, Jermaine Dupri, Lil Flip, and G-Unit.
Hip-Hop was totally different when it first started in the Bronx borough in New, York. Hip-Hop began as a positive way to express oneself. Songs like The “Message” by The Furious Five, and the “Ghetto” by Rakim, and countless joints by Public Enemy are examples of what music like when Hip-Hop first began. All these songs had a message, a reason to be heard. The early rappers had a genuine love fro rap& were just having fun, because money wasn’t a major issue. I just feel Hip-Hop has lost its way.
The artists today all rap about money and selling dope. All the music is misogynistic. It’s degrading to women with rappers like Too Short, and Ying Yang talking about ejaculating on women. It sales because the people who buy pay no attention to it. Those people aren’t into the lyrical talent of an artist; they feel if you can dance to it its good music. The females pay no mind to it because they all say, “he ain’t talking to me.” The music goes with what the next generation wants to be or simply brainwashed misogynist drug dealers. I believe the youth is highly influenced by the rappers and their music. No one wants to finish school because their favorite rapper dropped out.
I believe rappers today don’t fully understand their influence on the youth today. I just want to know do rappers know whatever they do there are some people who want to do the exact same thing. Hip-hop has become more mainstream than underground, which it was totally opposite in the beginning. Rappers are more into making money than just having fun like earlier rappers like the Juice Crew and the Cold Crush Brothers. With this being said, will hip-hop keep evolving into this monster of a quick cash machine, or will it return to its roots?
