Review of Keith Urban's "Be Here"

By Peggy Carpenter Harwood

Sitting at the dining room table listening to Keith Urban's CD "Be Here," I was trying to think of a review to write when it occurred to me to write about what I was listening to. Last month I bought this my first, but definitely not my last Urban CD. The album has 13 selections ranging from soft and sad to upbeat rock-a-billy.

When I first got the album, I played "Making Memories of Us" over and over, and I'm not tired of it yet. Presently it is the album's flagship. Urban sings to guitar back-up on this one. It has a feathered, easy rhythm. Classical lovers' promises make up the lyrics. Urban vows to "sleep with you forever and die in your arms." He promises to be her "man among men" and make her "world better than it's ever been." A truly romantic song. This listener can picture him singing it to bride Nicole.

"Country Comfort" is a rock-a-billy number with more country twang that "Making Memories of Us." This is a nostalgic look at beloved country living. It features brushed drums and an upbeat philosophy. The title comes from the line that reads "Country comfort in a truck that's going back home."

The beauty of this CD is that it has many strong songs. My song of the moment is "Tonight I wanna Cry." It's a sad song with a haunting piano accompanyment. The setting is Urban alone at night having drunk just enought wine to cry over the woman who "walked away." He's looking at old pictures and yearns "to let his feelings show." Beautiful song.

Two more of the songs deal with almost hopeless relationships, "The Hard Way" and "She's Gotta Be." The first deals with a marriage between two people who love each other but argue too much. Urban sings "...nobody's walking away, so I guess we've got to do it the hard way." In "She's Gotta Be" he complains about trying to please and win a woman he just can't get out of his mind.

The last song on the CD,"These are the Days", is another of his positive songs. It is upbeat and fast-paced. Here Urban sings that "these are the days we will remember" and advocates enjoying the here and now.

No matter whether your're just starting out on a romance or ending a heartbreaking one, in "Be Here" Urban is singing to you, especially if you're country at heart.
